Sildenafil (Viagra) - Tips for First Time Users

Today, millions of men take Sildenafil in the UK.

The number of men using Sildenafil has risen exponentially since 2014, as generic versions of Viagra became available, making it cheaper to purchase. Consumption has been supported by the fading stigma of using the treatment.

Whether you’ve taken Sildenafil before or you’re a first-time user, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the basic do’s and don’ts. There are a few things you can do to get the most out of it...

What to do…

Take it at the right time

Sildenafil usually starts to take effect within 30 to 60 minutes, so it’s best to take about an hour or so before you plan to have sex. If you’re relaxed and sexually aroused, it could take effect sooner. Sildenafil can last for up to 4 hours, so there’s no need to worry about rushing a romantic evening.

    Be in the mood

Sildenafil is a treatment that helps you get an erection, but don’t expect it to do all the work. Rather than giving you an erection that lasts for 4 hours, it provides a 4-hour window where the treatment is effective. Sildenafil works by relaxing the blood vessels of the penis which allows for greater blood flow into the penis. However, you need to be aroused to get the blood flowing in the first place.

      Take the right dosage

Sildenafil tablets for erectile dysfunction are available in different strengths ranging from 25mg to 100mg. The most common dose is 50mg, which it is recommended is taken no more than once a day. For older men, over the age of 65, they often start with the lower dose of 25mg, which may later be increased up to 100mg, depending on its efficacy and how well it’s tolerated.

        What not to do…

        Take on a full stomach

Sildenafil can be taken with or without food. However, Sildenafil may take longer to start working if you take it with a heavy meal, as this will likely delay absorption. If time is of the essence, opt for a lighter, low fat meal.

          Mix with alcohol

Whilst a glass of wine or a beer should be fine, it’s advised that you should not drink excessive amounts of alcohol before taking Sildenafil. This is because alcohol is a depressant which decreases sexual desire. It makes it more difficult to get into the mood, which is needed for Sildenafil to be effective. Alcohol also lowers blood pressure, which will means it's harder to get blood flow into the penis.

            Take alongside grapefruit

Grapefruit contains flavanoids which are believed to reduce the levels of certain intestinal enzymes that would otherwise break down many drug molecules before they reach the bloodstream.

Grapefruit, perhaps counter-intuitively, enhances the absorption of Sildenafil into the bloodstream which increases the likelihood of side effects, and at the same time delays the time taken for Sildenafil to take effect.
